From the office of Mayor George Schloegel

In the coming days, people across our city and across America will gather to celebrate the blessings of Christmas and the holiday season.

As we celebrate this joyous time of year, our thoughts and prayers are with those brave and selfless men and women serving our country in a foreign land. Let their sacrifices be an inspiration to us all.

Here at home, we know that these are difficult times for many Americans struggling under the weight of a slumping economy. As we give thanks for the blessings of friends and family, we are aware that there is growing uncertainty among the people of Gulfport about the future.

In the coming months, we all will have to make great sacrifices and difficult decisions, and I am confident that by working together we can conquer the challenges that lie ahead.

We have come a long way in the past few months and the progress we have made would not have been possible without the unbroken line of dedication from our employees.

Our success this past year would not have been possible, also, without the extraordinary support and devotion of the husbands and wives of our employees. Because of this team, Gulfport’s future is bright.

Peggy and I thank the people of Gulfport for embracing us as we enter this new chapter of our lives. We have you in our prayers this Christmas.

This season of giving should be a time to renew our sense of common purpose, to rededicate ourselves to serving this great city. Our convictions and ideals should endure, but we must move away from the usual practices of yesterday, and begin governing for a brighter tomorrow.

Now, more than ever, we must rededicate ourselves to the notion that we share a common destiny as citizens of Gulfport; that together we will continue to forge ahead, and continue pushing to make Gulfport one of America’s most vibrant and thriving communities.

That’s the spirit that will guide our city in the New Year. If we continue to work together, then I know we can put our city back on the path to greatness.

So this holiday season, let us celebrate the joy of Christmas and the promise of a new beginning for the City of Gulfport.

Sincerely,

George Schloegel
Mayor

A/C man gets 180 days, $4,000 fine for home repair fraud

A Gulfport man was convicted of home repair fraud today and sentenced to 180 days in jail by Municipal Judge Fant Walker.

Karl Moore, 39, also was ordered to repay $4,000 he swindled from a Gulfport family sometime around Sept. 9. According to city prosecutors, Moore was operating outside the scope of his business license, misrepresented the name of his business and failed to complete the work he initially agreed to do for the victims.

“This sort of thing—taking advantage of others—will simply not be tolerated in the City of Gulfport,” said Jim Halliday, the city’s lead prosecutor on the case. “This case was resolved swiftly thanks to the hard work of the Gulfport Police Department and prosecutor Kirk Clark.”
