From the office of Mayor George Schloegel

Today we remember the more than 3,000 innocent men, women and children who lost their lives on that horrific day eight years ago, when our nation was suddenly and deliberately attacked.

As we honor those who died, I would urge all of us to pay our respects through community service, and by renewing our commitment to working together for a better and brighter America.

Closer to home, we have made great strides this week toward a better and brighter Gulfport. The City Council unanimously passed a new tree preservation ordinance that prevents the widespread destruction of the natural canopy in residential neighborhoods.

Live oaks, Southern magnolias and many others are now protected in Gulfport. From now on, when a developer wishes to build a new subdivision he will be unable to scrape the land clean of all vegetation.

This was a great step in the right direction for our city and I want to thank the City Council for their help in getting it done.

In other news this week, the council approved a project to widen Dedeaux Road, one of the most congested arteries in our city. The plan is to widen a 2.6-mile stretch of Dedeaux to five lanes between Three Rivers Road and Mississippi 605.

The proposed project approved this week is only the beginning of a lengthy process to widen the road. The next step is for the city to submit its plan to the state Department of Transportation as soon as possible. MDOT will then begin an environmental study of the plan and when it’s complete, we will hold an official public hearing on the plan, hopefully before the year is out.

Meantime, the city is committed to communicating the plans clearly to the people of that area. We have held numerous community meetings about the project, including another schedule for next week. Councilman R.Lee Flowers and City Engineer Kris Riemann plan to work closely with Dedeaux Road residents and business owners through every step of the process.

We are making great progress in the City of Gulfport, paid for in sweat by our many hard working employees and ordinary citizens. Thank you all and have a great weekend.

Sincerely,

George Schloegel
Mayor
