State of the City

Mayor George Schloegel will give his first State of the City address on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at the new Lyman Community Center on U.S. 49. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and the event is open to the public.

Parts of the annual speech will focus on Gulfport’s recovery from the global economic crisis and the city’s continuing recovery from Hurricane Katrina.

The mayor will speak frankly about the city’s financial situation, but he also will discuss the actions City Hall has taken in recent months to help cut the budget deficit in half, and he will detail a plan that could erase the deficit entirely by year’s end.

In addition, Mayor Schloegel will call on the citizens of Gulfport to work together to clean up all visible reminders of the storm before the 5th anniversary arrives later this year, and he will touch on several steps the city has taken to move the cleaning process along, including the creation of a new Environmental Court and the City Council’s adoption of a new tree preservation ordinance.

The mayor is expected to make several big announcements regarding the city’s future and he also will speak about the relations between his administration and the City Council. Through a new commitment of communication and cooperation, the mayor’s office and the City Council have accomplished a great deal in just a few short months. The local government in Gulfport has been more successful in the past few months than it has been in decades.

The speech begins at 6 p.m. followed by light refreshments.

The 2010 State of the City is brought to you in part by the City of Gulfport, the Gulfport Chamber of Commerce, the Orange Grove-Lyman Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by the Island View Casino, Hancock Bank, Mississippi Power Company, Bancorp South, Gulfport Business Club, T.L. Wallace Construction, Inc., Milner Rental Center, and Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Gulfport.
