Rep. Taylor, Mayor Schloegel speak at WWII memorial

GULFPORT — Speaking to a crowd of more than 100 veterans today at the city’s WWII memorial, Mayor George Schloegel said that because of the perpetual spirit of those who willfully serve in the country’s armed forces, America can always be counted on.

“We are a grateful nation; grateful for those who put their lives on the line to make sure we would be standing here today,” Mayor Schloegel said. “Often times we take for granted the fact that America is a free country, but we never take for granted the fact that freedom is not free.”

Congressman Gene Taylor gave emotional accounts of two Mississippi veterans’ journeys in the military and he told a group of young students that the greatest tribute they could pay our veterans would be to say “I want to be just like you,” urging them to lead lives filled with duty, honor and respect.

“The world's greatest weapons are worthless if great, young Americans won't step forward to man them,” he said.
