On December 19, 1900, Town Marshal Walter E. Richardson responded to a disturbance complaint involving a local pastor identified as Alfred Lewis.  While attempting to calm Lewis down, Lewis' two sons approached him from behind and shot him three times in the back.  At the time of his death, Walter Richardson had 38 days remaining in his position as town marshal.  Richardson was survived by his wife.
